Terrific Tuesday and April Fools’ Day

Terrific Tuesday and April Fools’ Day
Yes, it is the first day of April and I’m not going to play any pranks to celebrate.  One famous person who was born on this date was Debbie Reynolds, an actress and dancer who starred in Singin’ in the Rain.  For anyone who hasn’t seen this movie, it has some of the most wonderful dance sequences ever put on film.
But I digress.  It is Tuesday and time for the Tip (Secret) of the Day:  When extending the leg in arabesque, do not try to fool the audience and “flag” the foot.  Yes, there is a bevel of the foot that completes the line of the leg with a slight upward curve, but this should be created by correctly stretching the foot and ankle.  Since the big toe side of the foot should stretch further (something that is developed through repetition in daily class), a bevel naturally occurs.  No “flagging” should be needed to create this curve.

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:
Secret 7q:
“A correctly stretched foot and ankle will produce a bevel (curve) of the foot in arabesque.  No “flagging” is necessary.”

Quote of the Day:

“Do or do not.  There is no ‘try’.”
