Throwback Thursday and White Christmas

Throwback Thursday and White Christmas

The familiar Christmas song, White Christmas, is historically the biggest selling Christmas song of all time.  But most people don’t know the story behind it.

It was written by Irving Berlin, and sung by Bing Crosby.  It was recorded in 1942 in just 18 minutes for the movie Holiday Inn with the Kim Darby Singers and the John Scott Trotter Orchestra.  The song was not released separately – that is, outside the context of the film.

But in 1947 the song was re-recorded, and Bing Crosby performed it in the movie White Christmas that also starred Danny Kaye, Vera-Ellen and Rosemary Clooney.  This is the version that we are familiar with today.  This movie contains some wonderful dance sequences as well!

From the Big Blue Book of Ballet Secrets:

Dance History Factoid #10:
“The song White Christmas was popularized in the movie of the same name.”
